Happy Pi Day!!

HI EVERYONE!! HAPPY PI DAY!!!

Okay, you need an explanation don't yah? Well, pi is a never ending number! 3.1415926535897932384626433... and so on! On March 14, it was "Pi Day". Get it… 3-14. Well, not officially! In 2015 @ 9:26 am or pm, it will OFFICIALLY be International (well maybe not) pi day! 3-14-15 @9:26! 

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!! 

At school in math, we celebrated pi day! It was kinda funny, since me and my friends Eva, Amelia, and I sometimes doodle and write on the board before class! I wrote, "On March 14, it is international pi day!" and then I wrote all of the digits of pi I knew, I think… (3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582097494459230781)

I think our teacher, Mrs. King, might of gotten the idea to celebrate pi day, from that! :)!! Maybe, I am not sure! Well… I don't know, I guess other people are aware that march 14 is 3-14, so… hee hee… erase what I just said. Anyway… 

On pi day, people brought in tons of food! Actually, since our section celebrated last compared to the other two, we had a little ordeal. Someone's donuts or something, had supposedly been eaten by a section before, and someone's homemade strawberry pie was missing! Finally, after much searching, going to the refrigerator in the teacher's lounge, and asking some teachers, they found the pie. We also had leftovers from other classes!! YEAH!!

Okay, so this is what we had:

• Leftover strawberry pie (from Foodland) with artificial strawberry filling and whatnot! Definitely not as good as the homemade one!
• Leftover Keylime pie!
• Scone thingys, I honestly don't know what they were!
• Powdered donuts!
• These other types of weird shaped donuts. THEY WERE GLAZED!
• Cheese and salami
• Water :)
• Chocolate cake (well not really a cake, more like a mini cake or a biggish brownie)
• And finally, the AMAZING homemade strawberry pie! There were real strawberries which were amazing! ALL IN ALL, THIS WAS BY FAR MOI FAVORITE!!!!!! THANKS GISELLE! 

So, happy pi day (which was yesterday… but whatever!)

Hi everyone! Sorry 'bout not posting in a while! I have had a lo of homework to do and assignments to complete including Math summatives, English and Science essays, and Tech sketches!

Happy Valentines Day!!

Hi Everyone! Welcome and HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!!! 
I hope you have a day filled with candy and fun!!!



So, how are you guys? What candies have you had? I have had:

Cherry Fun-dip
Cupcake Goldfish
A packet of gummy bears
An airhead
A chocolate covered marshmallow from Avery. 
A chocolate shaped in a frog
And more, maybe a chocolate and caramel kiss or two




SO YEAH TO HERSHEY'S!!! AND ALL THE OTHER CHOCOLATE AND CANDY COMPANIES  YEAH!  


Now for the random fact of the day: 
Amelia, a girl in my class, recommends a game called Whale Trail Frenzy. I will now say the things that she says while she plays the game:

"No! I missed it! Grr! I missed it again! Frenzy!! Ooh! Red star, orange star! Ooh a yellow star, green star, ooh! Fast thingy, light blue star! One more, then I can get a frenzy! What what??!! Ahh! Oh, I just died from the evil cloud things! Ohh! One hundred krill!!"

Faucets, now Twisting!

LOADS AND FORCES!!! 
Hi again! Today when I was washing my hands, I noticed another force in my house! The knobs on the sink in my mom's bathroom, is a good example of twisting. Sorry that is a bit random, but now that we are making blog posts about loads and forces, I am starting to notice so many more forces and loads. Here is a picture of what I am talking about. The thing on the right is one of the knobs. You can see that it is slightly turned already. The dead load of this object is the metal and everything else it is made out of. The live load, well, there isn't really a live load on these knobs. You don't put something on it.
The faucet is different. The dead load is the same (metal), but the water in it, could be the live load if you think about it.

No! Just kidding!!!! I will be talking about forces and loads. If you don't know what I mean by that, read the following:

Here are some examples of forces:

1. Squeezing:  Compression - a pressing force that squeezes materials together.
2. Stretching:  Tension- a force that stretches a material apart.
3. Bending: Buckle- the force makes one side of the material squeezes together and the other stretches apart
4. Sliding:  Shear - a force that causes part of the material to slide past one another in opposite directions.
5. Twisting:  Torsion - an action that twists a material

Loads are what they sound like, loads. Whether it is someone sitting on a chair (live load) or the actually chair itself (dead load). In this post, I will be focusing on loads around my house and the forces that are taking place on them. Well, here goes…

An example would be the dinner table. The live loads on it would be anything set on top, like forks, spoons, and knives…, any type of food or dish/plate/cup, or just anything we put on to it like books , paper , CDs , or computers. The dead load would be the table itself, including the wood and glue used to make it. 

The force taking place is mostly compression from gravity and the weigh of all the things on it.

An interesting thing is, I could be a dead load and a live load. For example, my hair is a dead load to me. It is part of me and is always connected to me (unless I shave of course). The things that I am wearing, like my watch and my clothes, are a live load. 

Loads and forces are everywhere!!! The chair you are currently sitting on, the screen that you are looking at!!!

Sorry about that cliff hanger a few posts ago! Fireworks in french is feux d'artifice! If you wanted a direct translation it means 'artificial fire' because, well, fireworks are basically artificial fire!

MYP1 Math Evidence of Learning

Current Unit Question: Why is it important to have a common mathmatical language?

Significant Concept: In order to communicate mathematical ideas effectively there needs to be a common understanding of symbols and rules.

Evidence:
In this unit, we chose a number system and researched about it. Amelia and I chose the Binary system. It was very fun and surprisingly simple to understand. This unit, was an especially interesting unit, were we learned about all different math systems. Some examples were:

• Roman Numerals
• Mayan
• Japanese and Chinese
• Indian/Arabic
• and Egyptian

Also, "Did you know that the base of our number system comes from India/Arabic?" That means that our system originated from the Indian number system. 

I think that it is important to have a commom mathmatical language so that we can all understand eachother! I mean, if we just had random symbols that only a few people understood, nothing would go right and the mathmatical world would be all messed up! This is also what could happen if we didn't have languages that people understand. No one would be able to communicate! Just like languages, there are many different number systems, like I said before. Different places in the world have different corresponding systems that everyone in that location understand. It is very important to have a common number system just like it's important to have a common language!
